Expansion Joints
Garlock Expansion Joints offer superior performance, reliability, and service life, resulting in improved plant safety and increased mechanical integrity of equipment. As specifically engineered products that are inserted in a rigid piping system, Garlock Rubber Expansion Joints will:
- Absorb movement
- Improve thermal stability
- Relieve system strain due to thermal change, load stress, pumping surges, wear of settling
- Reduce mechanical noise
- Compensate for misalignment
- Eliminate electrolysis between dissimilar metals
All of our expansion joints carry safety ratings that exceed product specifications in areas such as pressure and movement. Non-metallic expansion joints and flexible couplings are ideally suited for a wide variety of industries.
Expansion Joints for Pipes
Expansion joints for piping systems are flexible connectors, made out of PTFE, natural or synthetic elastomers, with combinations of rubber, fabric and metal reinforcement. Expansion joints installed into piping systems will help solve problems such as:
- Stresses - expansion joints absorb movement due to thermal expansion and contraction of pipes, wear, load stresses and settling of supports and foundations
- Misalignment - custom expansion joints can be manufactured with offsets to account for installation errors in pipe alignment, or for movement and settling over time
- Abrasion - with proprietary elastomers such as ABRA-LINE, abrasion can be significantly reduced compared to other rubber or metallic connectors
- Vibration - rubber expansion joints significantly reduce vibration when installed in proper locations and are not subject to metal fatigue failure
- Noise - transmission of sound is reduced as the expansion joint acts as a dampener and absorbs the noise levels
- Shock - effects of pressure surges, water hammer, or pump cavitation are resisted
- Corrosion - no metal to metal contact eliminating electrolysis between dissimilar metals
- Space - greatly reduced space required compared to expansion bends or loops
To select the proper piping expansion joint, it is critical to understand the media compatibility with the materials selected, full temperature, pressure and vacuum ranges, movements required, and dimensions between pipe flanges. With this information, Garlock application engineers can assist in determining the ideal expansion joint for any application.
For critical chemical applications, only Garlock offers a mechanically bonded GUARDIAN FEP Liner, eliminating the common failures of delamination in PTFE lined expansion joints. Available for Style 204 and Style 206 designs.
For abrasive applications, only Garlock offers expansion joints with an ABRA-LINE tube, offering superior abrasion resistance compared to other elastomers. Available for Style 204, Style 206, and Style 7250 designs.
For other applications, Garlock offers a wide variety of elastomers to suit the demands required and can be configured into most Style 204, Style 206, and Style 7250 designs.
Advanced Restrained Expansion Joints Styles
Style 204 Narrow Arch Expansion Joint Spool-type Rubber Expansion Joints
The Style 204 family of spool-type expansion joints are manufactured with the industry standard narrow arch design. This style is intended to be used in dynamic conditions where both pressure and vacuum concerns are present.

EZ-FLO® Style 206 Expansion joints for general service applications
Style 206 EZ-FLO® expansion joints contain a single wide flowing arch, eliminating the need for filled arches on slurry services. Suitable for high pressure applications, their self-flushing design eliminates media buildup and reduces fluid turbulence.
Style 206 EZ-FLO® can be designed to meet the requirements of ASTM F1123 and Navy/Coast Guard Specification 46CFR56.60-25(E).

Standard Design
Tube- Standard chlorobutyl liner extends to outer edge of the flange for excellent chemical resistance. The flowing arch design adds pressure resistance and reduces product buildup. Seamless tube creates a positive flange seal without gaskets.

Pressure and Vacuum Rating
Garlock PTFE expansion joints and couplings have pressure ratings high enough to handle most applications. As the pipe size gets larger, Garlock increases the bellows thickness and the strength of the reinforcing rings to compensate for the change in internal forces. This permits the same high pressure.

PTFE Control Units and Flanges
All PTFE joints and couplings are furnished with metallic flanges and tie rods/control units ready for immediate installation on the job site. Flanges in other alloys are available by special order.
- Flanges are protected to resist atmosphere corrosion and are tapped to ASME B16.5/B16.47 Series A Class 125/150 (standard).
- Control units are assembled with flanges to prevent joints from excessive axial elongation. They are designed to accept the static pressure thrust in the piping system.
- Tie rods are set at the factory at the maximum face-to-face working limits, with lock nuts as insurance against overextension of the expansion joint. The polyethylene covered tie rods eliminate metal-to-metal contact between the rods and flanges; the most frequent cause of noise transmission and electrolysis.
GARFLEX® Style 8100 General service expansion joint for high pressure applications
GARFLEX® expansion joints feature rugged yet flexible nylon tire cord reinforcement in a molded, spherical bellows design that ensures exceptional burst pressure ratings. The streamlined flowing arch design reduces turbulence and allows smooth, quiet flow without the restricted movement you'll find with a filled arch design.

Style 7250 FLEXO-MATIC®Expansion joint that conforms to U.S. Navy specifications
7250 FLEXO-MATIC® rubber connectors are composed of three basic elements: the tube, the body (carcass), and the cover. Designed to absorb noise and vibration in air-conditioning, heating, and industrial piping systems, Style 7250 FLEXO-MATIC® expansion joints accommodate a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and piping sizes.

- Eliminates noise at its source. Garlock FLEXO-MATIC® rubber connectors are designed to absorb equipment noise before it is transmitted through piping systems.
- Reduces vibration and lengthens equipment life because high-frequency vibrations are virtually eliminated.

The construction features of the 7250 FLEXO-MATIC® is as follows:- The Tube–A protective, leakproof lining made of a synthetic rubber which may vary depending on the service. Garlock's standard tube is specially compounded to resist the hot and cold water found in air conditioning and heating systems. The seamless tube extends through the bore to the outer edge of the flange. Its purpose is to eliminate the possibility of the fluid penetrating the carcass and weakening the fabric.
- The Body or Carcass–Consists of fabric and rubber, reinforced with metal.
- A. Fabric Reinforcement – Cotton duck, Dacron®, or other suitable fabrics impregnated with an elastomer are wrapped and applied to provide the flexibility and support required between the tube and cover.
- B. Metal Reinforcement – Helical-wound steel reinforcement wire is firmly embedded in the carcass to provide resistance to both vacuum and pressure. Extra strength is provided in the critical flange corner area to provide positive flange sealing at 150psi for Style 7250.
- The Cover – A homogeneous layer of synthetic rubber to protect the carcass from corrosive attack or mechanical damage, the rugged cover withstands aging and weathering for a long, trouble-free life.
- Flanges – Garlock expansion joints are furnished with USA Standard 125/150lb. or 250lb. drilling. Navy or other special drilling and beaded flanges are also available on request.
- Steel Retaining Rings – Installed directly against the inner face of each flange, they provide a metal surface which equally distributes the bolt pressure around the flange. The bolts cannot damage the flange and yet sufficient pressure can be applied to effect a seal without using gaskets. Retaining rings are normally furnished with a corrosion-resistant coating, but galvanized or stainless steel retaining rings are also available on request.

Ducting and Low Pressure Expansion Joints
Ducting and low pressure expansion joints are lightweight flexible connectors designed for gaseous media made out of natural or synthetic elastomers, with combinations of rubber and fabric reinforcement especially for scrubbers, precipitators, baghouses, and fans in air handling systems. Ducting expansion joints will help solve problems such as:
- Stresses - expansion joints absorb movement due to thermal expansion and contraction of ducting.
- Misalignment - the lightweight and highly flexible nature of the expansion joints installs easily and compensates for installation tolerances in duct alignment, or for movement and settling over time.
- Noise - transmission of sound is reduced as the expansion joint acts as a dampener and absorbs the noise levels.
- Vibration - rubber expansion joints significantly reduce vibration when installed in proper locations and are not subject to metal fatigue failure.
Similar low pressure expansion joints are often found in gravity fed applications in the connections of hoppers, silos, shaker tables, vibratory conveyors, and bowl feeders where large amounts of movement with minimal resistance is required. High quality, premium connectors in these applications help improve process efficiency by reducing material loss, foreign contamination, and replacement frequency. The flanged and sleeve connectors allow for easily installation and improve airborne and physical hazards associated with media leaking outside of these processes. Low pressure expansion joints also help solve problems such as:
- Abrasion - with proprietary elastomers such as ABRA-LINE, abrasion can be significantly reduced compared to other rubber or metallic connectors.
- Corrosion - no metal to metal contact eliminating electrolysis between dissimilar metals.
Optional metal reinforcement in Style 9394 Expansion Joints allow for a high level of flexibility and movement along with greater pressure and vacuum capabilities typically found in standard ducting expansion joints.
Style 8400 Flue Duct Expansion Joints
Style 8400 flue ducts are available in round, rectangular, or square configurations; as belt type (without flanges) or U-type (flanged); with virtually no size restrictions. Garlock also provides on-site vulcanizations for flue ducts that require splicing into position, due to obstructions or interferences that prevent continuous construction installations.

Control Units / Tie Rods Control units and tie rods
Control units are recommended on most applications to prevent damage due to excessive pipe movements. They are not designed to replace pipeline anchoring. Control units consist of two or more tie rods connected between pipe flanges.

- Triangular end plates (gussets) have two holes for bolting securely to flange and one hole to accommodate the connecting tie rod. Gusset plates are cut from ASTM A36 Carbon Steel plate.
- Tie rods are cut from ASTM A193 Grade B7 threaded rod. Each rod incorporates double nuts on each end to keep the expansion joint from over-elongating due to pressure thrust forces.
- Nuts are ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts.
- Spherical washers are incorporated to accommodate moderate piping alignments but also assist with angular, torsional and lateral movements.
- Gusset plates are coated black with a corrosion resistant paint. This is the same coating that is applied to Garlock retaining rings.
- Tie rods and nuts are clear zinc plated according to ASTM F1941/F1941M, “Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings on Mechanical Fasteners, Inch and Metric”.
- Zinc plating offers improved corrosion resistance resulting in easier adjustments of the control units over time.

Expansion Joint Inspections
As part of a preventive maintenance (PM) program, routine expansion joint inspections serve an important role in maximizing up time and efficiency. With an ongoing decline in the availability of skilled trades, maintenance technicians and reliability engineers are assuming responsibility for more equipment and larger areas of the plant. There are simply not enough hours in the day or resources at hand to perform every PM recommended to keep a facility running. Consequently, manufacturer recommended expansion joint PM can be easily overlooked or forgotten.
Unlike most system components, rubber expansion joints exhibit obvious outward signs of deterioration. This deterioration is typically due to settling, misalignment, excessive movement, chemical incompatibility, or a combination thereof. While these characteristics may be obvious during visual inspection, it can be difficult for untrained personnel to judge the severity of the deterioration.
Preventative Maintenance and Reliability (PMR) Benefits
Garlock’s engineers and specialists will perform inspections of all rubber (non-metallic) expansion joints currently installed or in inventory. As part of the service, each expansion joint you utilize will be visually inspected, evaluated, and pertinent visual and dimensional data recorded. This comprehensive service will provide the following:
- Manufacturer recommended periodic inspection
- System nomenclature and expansion joint identification information
- Recommended replacement schedule including priority ratings
This compiled data will help engineering, maintenance and purchasing personnel formulate the necessary maintenance and replacement schedules and forecast repair budgets more accurately. Inspection
As part of the in-service portion of the inspection, we will obtain detailed measurements from existing pipe flanges to document and detect piping misalignment. Garlock currently offers three inspection levels to address your needs.
- EXPRESS: Includes a walk down and visual inspection in the desired area(s) of the plant, as well as measurement of any expansion joints showing obvious signs of deterioration. Garlock will discuss the on-site findings with your staff during the visit and provide recommendations and a priority replacement list based on the inspection findings.
- ENHANCED: Includes all Express services as well as a summary report detailing our findings and recommendations.
- EXPANSIVE: Includes all Enhanced services as well as a complete listing of all expansion joints inspected with information including condition of existing products and product recommendations.
Guaranteed Fit
Expansion joints measured by Garlock, ordered through a participating distribution partner, and installed utilizing proven installation practices as recommended by the Fluid Sealing Association are guaranteed to fit correctly. In the event of a measurement error, Garlock will expedite and replace the expansion joint free of charge.
Consolidation

Abrasive Applications
The Garlock Expansion Joint Family of Abrasion Resistant Products has been developed for highly abrasive applications. By design, these products are proven to reduce wear and extend service life compared to standard expansion joints. Together, ABRA-LINE®, ABRA-SHIELD®, and Natural Rubber provide superior performance and exceptional quality in Power Generation, Fertilizer, Mining, Pulp and Paper, Wastewater, Marine and other markets.
ABRA-LINE®
Developed for highly abrasive applications, our proprietary, millable urethane formula was designed to be the most abrasion resistant rubber liner available in an expansion joint. It has been proven to reduce wear and extend service life by causing even the most aggressive media to simply slide over the liner rather than dig in and remove material.
Third party testing revealed that ABRA-LINE® expansion joints last 2-3 times longer than traditional elastomers. Plus, the ABRA-LINE® expansion joints’ unique yellow color takes the guesswork out of determining if they are due for replacement. As the liner wears down, the yellow color darkens as the black backing becomes more prominent.

NATURAL RUBBER
A common industry solution for basic abrasion resistance, natural rubber is often seen in a soft, tan, gum form. Natural Rubber from Garlock is black in color and features carbon black and other additives designed to improve its innate abrasion resistance and other, key physical properties.

ABRA-SHIELD®
Our proprietary hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber formula was specifically engineered for highly abrasive applications above the temperature limit of ABRA-LINE®. With over 50% better abrasion resistance than standard materials, ABRA-SHIELD® has proven high performance in diverse, aggressive applications with short or long term heat exposure up to 300°F (150°C).
Unlike natural rubber, ABRA-SHIELD® has superior resistance to attack by petroleum oils, ozone, and UV.
Temperature Range: -83°F (-64°C) to 300°F (150°C)
Chemical Applications
The Garlock family of chemically resistant products was developed with safety in mind. Our proprietary process for GUARDIAN® FEP mechanically bonded liners results in the industry’s safest sealing solution for hazardous and dangerous chemicals. With Garlock, you’ll have the peace of mind knowing that our materials are always 100% of the polymer specified. Garlock’s team of engineers formulate all the compounds used, eliminating the chance for catastrophic failures due to the presence of an unknown, incompatible polymer’s presence in a blended compound.
GUARDIAN® FEP LINER
A chemically resistant FEP liner that is mechanically bonded to the rubber expansion joint. This high-density FEP liner reduces permeation and offers optimal chemical resistance in applications up to 400°F. Only GUARDIAN® FEP Liners have no glue to be vulnerable to chemical attack. Comparable PTFE/FEP glue-in liners are highly susceptible to delamination and failure. GYLON® 3545 gaskets are also available with GUARDIAN® FEP liners to help achieve a seal with raised face flange connections, but a gasket is not required on flat face flanges.

FLUOROELASTOMERS (FKM)
Commonly referred to as VITON® or 3M FLUOREL®, Garlock’s fluoroelastomer compound provides excellent chemical resistance in applications requiring the highest temperature rating available for rubber. Also considered the nearest thing to a universal elastomer, this specialty compound is also impervious to gasoline and UV/ Ozone attack. Though it is not ideal for hot water, steam, polar solvents, low molecular weight esters and ethers, Garlock offers other options with higher fluorine content for improved temperature and chemical resistance.

HYPALON (CSM)
Optimal elastomer for applications which require diluted acid and ozone resistance within a moderate temperature range. Excellent compatibility with most chemicals, ideal for cover materials where resistance to weather and ultraviolet light is critical.

EPDM
Resistance to water absorption makes this elastomer the leading tube choice for water handling applications. It’s outstanding UV/ Ozone resistance also make EPDM the first choice for cover materials in outdoor applications. In addition, EPDM also exhibits good performance in mild heat aging and acid systems.

The tube is compatible for most animal fat and vegetable oil food products with good resistance to abrasion and water absorption. The blue color allows for additional contamination detection with automated vision and manual systems.

SURE-TEC supplies exceptionally good abrasion and outstanding water absorption resistance as well as good resistance to many alkaline chemical services. This unique elastomer possess a variety of important qualities that make it the expansion joint industry standard material. Chlorobutyl has exceptionally low permeability to gases, excellent vibration dampening properties, and good heat, chemical, ozone, and oxidation resistance.

NEOPRENE (CHLOROPRENE)
Commonly used as a cover material for expansion joints, neoprene possesses the fire retardant properties needed for compliance with ASTM F1123. It's a high performing solution in harsh weather conditions, low temperatures, and general outdoor service. Neoprene is also available as a tube liner; creating a solution for a range of media including chemical, oil, grease and fuel.

Reinforcing Materials
POLYESTER
Garlock features polyester fabric reinforcement in many of the expansion joint styles available. Coupled with metal body rings, the tightly woven fabric of polyester resists strand separation under pressure due to its high bidirectional strength.

NYLON TIRE CORD
Garlock also utilizes a high tensile strength tire cord for pressure reinforcement on a variety of styles. The biased tire cord reinforcement plies are applied to the expansion joint at a specific bias angle to obtain the best balance of pressure retention and resistance to swelling/strand separation.

Garlock makes use of high strength KEVLAR® Tire Cord as an alternative material for elevated temperature service. Styles using KEVLAR® Tire Cord can achieve a maximum of 300°F without impacting pressure rating.

Fiberglass/KEVLAR is utilized in Garlock expansion joints for maximum temperature service. Designed for flue gas or exhaust systems, this fabric offers high durability and pressure retention in extreme temperature applications.

Style 8400-HT Custom High-Temperature Flue Duct Expansion Joint
In typical Garlock fashion, the 8400-HT will be custom designed to meet or exceed the individual requirements of each application or system design specifications. The 8400-HT is available in a multitude of configurations and material combinations, complimenting our existing 8400 family of lower temperature products (8400-250, 8400-300, 8400-400). The 8400-HT is able to accommodate operating temperatures as low as -75°F / -60°C and up to 2200°F / 1200°C.
Features and Benefits
Specific combinations of fluorine based hydrocarbon polymers and reinforcing materials offer an unusually high resistance to corrosive substances at high temperatures, ideal for most operating conditions in flue gas desulphurization systems (FGD).
- Very good rebound characteristics that help resist permanent deformation
- Special resistance to SO₂, H₂SO₄ and other corrosive chemical substances
- Continuous operating temperature in excess of 400°F
Applications

Style 9278 EZ-FLO® Expansion joint that conforms to U.S. Navy specifications
Style 9278 EZ-FLO® expansion joint is designed to meet the requirements of ASTM F1123, and is constructed of neoprene and polyamide. Retaining rings must be galvanized in accordance with the specification. Hydrostatic testing may be required and is performed in-house at our Palmyra, New York, USA facility.
Style 104GS
This general service expansion joint is designed to accommodate a wide variety of operating conditions across various industries. Although economically priced, the 104GS has been rigorously tested to ensure that it provides the same quality and consistency that is expected from Garlock products.

- The versatility of the neoprene tube and cover makes the 104GS ideally suited for a wide range of media transfer.
- The wider, abrupt arch allows for greater movements and helps to reduce the affects of moderate sediment transfer.
- Metal reinforcement enables the expansion joint to handle 26in Hg / 660 mm Hg for all sizes.
- Available 2in / mm thru 36in / mm ID from stock, complete with galvanized carbon steel retaining rings as standard.
