Can TEADIT JAMPAK be used in place of all conventional packing applications?
No, it is not as simple as that. Jampak and the Seal-Cage System was designed for special applications. The shaft diameter, the operating temperature and the chemical characteristics of the medium are deciding criteria if Jampak can be used successfully or not. The biggest advantage of the Jampak System is the fact, that leakage can be stopped (reduced to an acceptable level) by injecting more Jampak sealant WITHOUT having to interrupt the production process!! Repacking of the pump – which becomes necessary with conventional packing after the leakage cannot be reduced to an acceptable level anymore – can be avoided or at least deferred until the next scheduled maintenance stop. Can a gasket cut from a non-asbestos fibre sheet be re-used after a maintenance inspection?
This is not advisable for different reasons. These kind of materials are bound by some kind of rubber, and this rubber does harden with temperature and time. The gasket loses its malleability and therefore its ability to seal. A new gasket should be installed after every maintenance inspection.
 

Can a gasket cut from a Teadit 24SH sheet be used in all areas where Teadit 24B is currently being used?
Yes, this is certainly possible. Both styles are 100% pure PTFE. The multi- directional fibre structure of 24 SH offers even additional advantages. However, because the two materials behave slightly different under compression (width and thickness), it will be important to choose the correct dimensions. More details in our catalogue.


Can a gasket with a metal eyelet be re-used?
No, under no circumstances. A once compressed gasket loses nearly all elasticity and would not seal anymore. Always use a new gasket.
 





Can a graphite gasket, cut from a sheet, be used with a temperature of 550°C?
Yes, if it is a steam application. The temperature limit for graphite for dry applications is app. 450°C. If oxygen can be excluded (i.e. use of an inert gas like Nitrogen) graphite can withstand temperatures of over 1000°C (up to 3000°C).
 

Can a packing with silicone oil impregnation be used for applications in connection with the production of foodstuff, potable water, etc.?
Any time, if the packing is generally suitable for such applications. Teadit style 2007 - and other styles - is impregnated with silicone oil and has the FMPA approval for use with foodstuff and the WRc approval for use with potable water. Ask for copies of those approvals.






Can a pump packing also be used for valves?
This depends on the packing. Many Teadit packings can be used for both kinds of equipment. As a matter of fact, it is possible to standardise a whole factory one only one or two styles of Teadit packing. Please consult our packing catalogue and/or sales team for more details.
 


Can ePTFE (in form of tape - Teadit 24B, or sheet - Teadit 24SH) be used as a lid seal?
Because expanded PTFE has little recovery and hardly any elasticity, it is actually not suitable as a seal for "opening and closing" applications. This kind of material is best suited as gasket for permanent connections, like flanges, housings, etc.
 

Can one use Teadit 24B in areas where gaskets cut from Teadit 24 SH sheets are currently being used?
This depends on the circumstances. The Teadit 24B gasket tape has to be stuck onto the flange (sealing) faces (with the help of the adhesive backing), and for this one needs a certain distance between the two flange faces. Teadit 24B behaves different under compression than 24 SH, this has to be considered when deciding on the required dimension. Can one use the less expensive Teadit 24 B in place of the dearer 25 BI?
Because the two materials behave different under load, Teadit 25 BI can solve sealing problems which cannot be solved with Teadit 24 B. One could almost say that “25BI begins to work where 24B stops (starts to fail)”. See our expanded PTFE catalogue or send detailed enquiry.
 


Can one use the Teadit packing style 2007 for applications in the paint industry?
NO, because the packing is impregnated with silicone oil. Teadit has special packings for these applications which contain no silicone, e.g. style 2000, 2200, 2005, 2006, 2044, 2060, etc. More info...

Can Teadit packing style 2007 be used for waste water applications in sewage plants?
This depends on the application within the plant. Waste water may contain a lot of abrasive solids which could damage the packing. For those cases we recommend the use of a "heavy duty" packing like Teadit styles 2070, 2044 or similar.
 


Is Teadit 24 B resistant against concentrated acids?
Yes, Teadit 24B is resistant against nearly all chemicals. The only exceptions are molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine at high temperature and pressure.
 




Is the ePTFE-tape TEADIT 24B also available for temperatures above 270°C ?
No, 270°C is the temperature limit for all PTFE products. Temperature peaks up to a maximum of 310°C are permissible, but only for very short periods! Teadit has developed a special graphite tape - Teadit style 3110 and 3110/I - as a flange and/or lid seal for applications with temperatures exceeding the 270°C barrier of PTFE. This very versatile gasket tape can be used for temperatures up to 650°C in steam applications. Please check the data sheet for more details.
 

What are the advantages of gaskets with metal eyelets?
The metal of the eyelet protects the inner diameter of the gasket from mechanical and chemical attack of the flowing medium, making the gasket seal better and longer. In addition, the metal beading prevents the medium from penetrating and diffusing into and/or through the gasket.
 

What exactly is the difference between Teadit 24 B and Teadit 25 BI?
The difference lies in the structure of the two materials. 24B is expanded in one direction only, e.g. has very high tensile strength in the longitudinal direction but little tensile strength across. Therefore the tape gets considerably thinner and wider under compression (see graph in catalogue). Teadit 25 BI is multidirectionally expanded, i.e. has nearly the same tensile strength in both longitudinal and cross direction, therefore is has high dimensional stability. It does not get wider under load and gets thinner only up to a certain degree, i.e. the remaining thickness under load is much bigger than is the case with 24B. Besides, 25BI is not subject to shrinking as is the case with conventional PTFE joint sealant tapes. These different characteristics are influencing criteria when choosing the best suitable material for a certain application.
 

What is the difference between Teadit 24B and Teadit 24BB?
As far as the make-up of the material and the operating parameters are concerned, there is NO difference between the two styles. The main difference is the availability of sizes, i.e. the available width and thickness, which is also the deciding factor which of the two styles to choose for a certain application. Packing rings ought to be cut with a proper packing cutter only! This guarantees not only the correct length of the rings, but also the correct kind of cut, i.e. cutting angle. Hint: Winding some PTFE-thread-sealing-tape around the area of the packing where it will be cut (app. 50mm of it), will prevent the cut ends from fraying. This is particularly important for "dry" packings like 2001, 2200, etc.

Which style of packing is best suited as hatch- and/or lid seal?
Because lids are being opened and closed, one needs a packing with high elasticity. This can be achieved by inserting a rubber (e.g. NBR, Silicone, Viton) core. Teadit has developed a special style of packing for tank lids and similar applications, Teadit 2500.

Can Teadit 24SH be used in oxygen applications?
Yes. The multidirectionally expanded PTFE-sheet is made from 100% pure PTFE. And pure PTFE is suitable for use with oxygen. Teadit 24B, which is also made from 100% pure PTFE, has the BAM and BOC oxygen approvals. Please note: the gasket – or gasket tape – may not be contaminated with oil or grease during installation when used with oxygen.
